What is Tobacco Beetle?
The Tobacco Beetle, or Lasioderma serricorne, is a pest that can infest cigars and cause significant damage. These small beetles lay eggs in the tobacco leaves, and when the larvae hatch, they feed on the tobacco, creating holes in the cigars. Tobacco beetles are particularly problematic in humid environments where the temperature exceeds 70°F (21°C), which encourages the beetles to thrive. To prevent infestations, cigars should be stored at a humidity level between 65% and 70% and at a temperature below 70°F. Many cigar manufacturers freeze their cigars after production to kill any beetle eggs before shipping.
